Gypsy on Broadway
There’s a reason why Audra McDonald’s name is the same size as the show title on this poster. She is an absolute tornado the cast twisted around the entire show. I joked with the friend I was with that the amount of energy McDonald expended in Act 1 was as much energy as I’ve got to power me through a year.
This was my first time seeing Gypsy and it was fun to realize two classic songs are from the show: Wherever We Go and Everything’s Coming Up Roses. (Sondheim, man.)
As much as I enjoyed McDonald’s performance, the story of an overbearing stage mom left me dry-eyed, while others sitting nearby sniffled into their tissues during the emotional finale. Audra’s Rose was a tough character for me to like, but I’ll be cheering for McDonald to win the Tony this June.
