Survivor 48

It’s remarkable that almost 50 seasons in, this show is still entertaining, and that Jeff Probst’s dimples are still working for him. I haven’t watched Survivor in over a decade, but a friend recommended this season.

What struck me most was the disability/capability representation. Eva came out as the first-ever publicly autistic contestant mid-game, after becoming totally overwhelmed at a challenge and needing support. She openly discussed the implications of her autism in her social game, even as she sailed to the final tribal. Mitch’s stutter, which showed up in all his interviews and interactions, didn’t keep him from becoming the most well-liked member of the tribe.

The season also revolved around two powerful and different partnerships between contestants who got tight, and played their games in lockstep. Satisfying to watch them choose a partner early on and commit to the end.
